Hochalpines Institut Ftan (HIF)

The HIF is a co-educational school at secondary level that offers Swiss and international courses for pupils from 7th to 12th grade. It is recognized by the canton of Graubünden for the preparation and implementation of the Swiss Matura, and accredited by the Cambridge Assessment organization as a center for the International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE). The HIF is a recognized IB World School and offers the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Program.

The Hochalpine Institut Ftan (HIF), Swiss International School and Sports Academy, was founded in 1793 and is shaped by the humanitarian traditions of Switzerland and the values of the great Swiss educators. The HIF cultivates a student-centered school culture and appreciative relationships between teachers, supervisors and learners. This results in high demands on teaching and learning as well as the discovery and development of individual talents and achievements in a motivating and supportive school community.

At HIF, we prepare our learners to go out into the world with the knowledge, intellectual skills, and emotional maturity to find fulfillment in their personal lives as well as in their academic and professional careers. The school aims to promote openness, critical thinking, independent research and teamwork through teaching and learning with a local, national and international perspective. We support our learners in becoming global citizens who think internationally and are aware of their responsibility for our common planet.

In a class of its own in sport

The Hochalpine Institut Ftan (HIF) is one of the most successful Swiss sports schools and officially runs the training cells of the Bündner Skiverband (BSV) for snowboarding and Nordic skiing. In addition, the HIF is a regional performance center (RLZ) Swiss Ski Alpin.

Whether you are a ski champion or a recreational golfer, sport is an important part of HIF training. It promotes health, well-being, resilience, self-discipline and team spirit. Exercise is also a source of joy and inspiration. With its team of trainers and excellent sports facilities, the HIF enables young people to combine competitive or hobby sports with a school program. Sports are cross-country skiing, alpine skiing and freestyle, alpine snowboarding and freestyle and ice hockey. A special mentoring program ensures the coordination of sporting and school activities. We take care of the concerns and the development of every single student, regardless of their level of performance. Motivation and joy are the decisive factors for success in school and in sport.

The boarding school: Live together, learn together

The safety and well-being of every student is the basis for success in school and sport. For many months of the year, the HIF is the home for its boarding school students. During the day – in the classroom, on the sports field, in the gym and during many activities – they learn and live together with the young people from the village and the valley. This results in a melting pot of languages and cultures, where a reliable network is established and lifelong friendships are not infrequently created. This is how international education works: local meets global, both sides learn from each other, participate in the lives of the other and are enriched by the experience.

Learning in a fantastic location

The High Alpine Institute Ftan is located in the picturesque Engadine above the village of Ftan on a sun terrace with a breathtaking view of the Engadine Dolomites. In addition to learning, the wonderful nature invites you to take part in a wide variety of sporting activities – from climbing, riding and biking in summer to cross-country skiing, skiing and snowboarding in winter. In the immediate vicinity of the school, a chair lift leads directly to the Motta Naluns ski area and the cross-country ski run, toboggan runs and hiking trails start right outside the front door. Doing sports, making friends and learning successfully in front of a fantastic natural backdrop is part of everyday life in Ftan.
